We didn’t know there were so many bears living in the city, we didn’t know because the city grew and took over a big part of the green and turned it into gray. Later, climate change affected the natural spaces of the city, up in the mountains the lack of rain meant there were less plants to eat. Bears started coming down from the mountains more and more often, they started being less shy with humans, they got in their neighborhoods, backyards and houses in search of food and water. Images of bears interacting with people in the city started appearing more and more in the news and in social media... “Bear steals tacos at a picnic”, “Bear enjoys swimming at a house in San Pedro”, “Bear taps woman in the back”.

I feel like we took over a natural space and the original owners who lived there don’t have a choice but to interact with us, to become immersed in these fake spaces that are our cities. I’m representing these interesting and sad interactions by painting stills of videos I find on the internet, or painting photographs that I find of these stories in the news or in social media.
